Creating our first TV commercial in Crawley
Back in January of 2016, Hollywood Bowl got in touch to enquire about producing an Easter TV commercial, to help raise their brand awareness. The brief was competitive and the DF team came up with about 12 different approaches for the advert storyline. Hollywood Bowl loved the idea of a boy bowling with his family watching tensely, as they wait for the final pin to fall. This approach was agreed at the start of Feb and we achieved a ClearCast script approval by mid-month.
We filmed the 30 second commercial at the end of Feb, in HB’s Crawley venue. With filming complete, the advert was edited over the next couple of weeks; ready for launch on Sky AdSmart on 21st March 2016 (just in time for the Easter holidays!).
Our top 5 TV checklist points
We learnt a lot about producing our first TV commercial and we wanted to share with you our top 5 things to think about when creating a TV commercial:
- Know your audience: Define exactly who you are speaking to and tailor every visual and written message to resonate specifically with them.
- Animation vs live action? Both have their uses so think which approach works best for the product or messaging.
- Budget: Set your budget but don’t forget that you need budget for the production of the TV commercial as well as to buy the media space.
- Don’t ignore the legals: Factor in enough time for ClearCast approval to ensure your TV commercial is fully compliant and to avoid costly legal delays later.
- It’s more than just a TV commercial: Your ad is more than just 30 seconds on screen. How will your ad will work on different social channels? How would an edited version work if it had to be cut to 15 seconds for use on Instagram?
