September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month and we wanted to take this opportunity to thank and highlight some of the fantastic work Leukaemia UK do! Did you know that someone in the UK is diagnosed with blood cancer every 16 minutes? There are many different types of blood cancers and this is why it is the 5th most common type of cancer in this country. Leukaemia UK is an amazing charity that spends every waking hour supporting people through the physical, psychological and emotional uncertainty that comes with a diagnosis. Not only do they support patients but, they also provide care and advice to the families that are affected by their loved ones’ terrible news. Here is a selection of ways that Leukaemia UK are supporting those affected by blood cancer by:
Funding research for better treatment and care
Leukaemia UK have helped fund some of the biggest breakthroughs in treatment and care advances for those affected by a blood cancer. They continue to fund the research and projects in developing kinder and more effective treatments.
Investing in healthcare professionals
Through their grants programme, Leukaemia UK invests in the best clinicians, researchers and scientists. Their grants fund research projects, help develop care pathways and equip professionals with the skills to discover improvements in care or advances in treatment.
Accelerating treatments through clinical trials
As part of the IMPACT stem cell transplant clinical trials initiative, Leukaemia UK help fast-track the testing of drug and cellular therapies for patients who experience complications after a stem cell transplant. It allows transplant centres across the UK to work together to deliver clinical trials focused on stem cell transplantation. The emotional support during and after treatment is a vital part of Leukaemia UK’s work and that’s why they have launched ‘The Mind and Body‘ team. Psychologists, a psychiatrist, counsellors and a social worker work with the haematology team at King’s College Hospital to provide holistic care at every stage of treatment.
Transforming blood cancer care
Through their care projects Leukaemia UK improves access to treatment for those affected by blood cancers and provides the opportunities to bring people together who are experiencing life with a blood cancer diagnosis.
Providing critical financial support
Nothing can prepare you for the financial burden that comes with an unexpected illness. Leukaemia UK offers one-off grants via our helping hand funds to ease families or individuals through a difficult period.
