2D animated explainer for London-based SuRF UK. Produced, designed and animated by Dreaming Fish Productions.

DreamingFish x SuRF UK
SuRF UK (the UKβs Sustainable Remediation Forum) first approached us in 2019 to help bring their services to life. They needed an animated explainer that could make complex sustainable remediation feel accessible and engaging. Given the technical nature of the subject, we opted for a bespoke illustrative style to help simplify the science and keep the storytelling front and centre.
Collaborating closely with a very talented illustrator, we crafted a bespoke visual identity for the project. To bring the story to life, we blended 2D digital animation with hand-drawn cell animation, creating a series of intricate, high-end scenes. We then layered in clean explainer-style elements to balance the technical detail to fully complement the overall look of this animated video.

The production
To ensure every element of the explainer was truly bespoke, our Lead Designer and Head of Audio, Jonty, composed a custom music track and layered rich, immersive sound design throughout the piece. This tailored audio helped elevate the visuals, ensuring the pacing and tone perfectly matched SuRF UK’s message. We thoroughly enjoyed the creative journey with the SuRF UK team, and itβs safe to say they were thrilled with the final film. Take a look at the finished result below!
FAQs about animated video production
Absolutely. Weβre firm believers that sound is 50% of the cinematic experience. Our in-house team crafts bespoke music scores and immersive soundscapes designed to breathe life into your visuals. Every “ping,” “whoosh,” and rhythmic beat is layered to ensure the audio perfectly syncs to the on-screen action.
Every project is unique but generally, a high-quality animated explainer can take between 4 to 8 weeks from the initial idea to final delivery. This allows us enough time for scriptwriting, storyboarding, bespoke illustration, and sound design without rushing the creative process.
Usually, all we need is a brief overview of your goals, your target audience and purpose of your video. If you have specific technical documents (like the ones SuRF UK provided), those are great too. Weβll handle everything else. So, why not contact us?
