2024 Golden Globes
Another year, another Golden Globe Awards show! On Sunday 7th Jan, the infamous show, hosted in Beverly Hills, California, highlighted some of the best in film and American television across the 2023 year. The show has been hosted by some famous faces over the years including the likes of Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and many others but, this year saw American stand-up comedian and actor, Jo Koy, take the stage.
There were some big contenders from last year, with the most popular/ dominating nominees (naturally) being from Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (with 9 nominations) and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (with 8 nominations.) If you remember, both polar opposite movies hit the box office on the same day (21st July) but which one came out on top on the night? Irish actor, Cillian Murphy took the trophy for ‘Best Male Actor in a Drama Motion Picture’ for his outstanding role in Oppenheimer, against the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper and other fellow Irish actor, Barry Keoghan. Oppenheimer continued their streak on the night with a few more wins including; ‘Best Original Score’ (by Ludwig Göransson) ‘Director of a Motion Picture’ was awarded to Christopher Nolan (Barbie was also in this category) along with Robert Downey Jr (pictured below) being crowned ‘Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture’, against Ryan Gosling, for his role as Ken in Barbie movie. With 4 wins under their belt, it was time for Barbie to have their say. Whilst Oppenhiemer won ‘Best Original Score’ the award for ‘Best Original Song’ went to “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas (both pictured below). “Thank you so much. To the Golden Globes, I was not expecting this in this moment. Thank you to my brother Finneas, you are the reason I am who I am,” Eilish said during her acceptance speech. “I want to thank Greta and Noah for making this incredible film. I want to thank Margot for being Margot — that we know and love.” It is a great song, but is it better than Dua Lipa and Mark Ronson’s ‘Dance the Night’ or ‘I’m just Ken’? Barbie also won the ‘Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures’ award against Oppenheimer.
Other winners from the night were Lily Gladstone for Best Female Actor in a Film – Drama for “Killers of the Flower Moon”, Emma Stone won Best Female Actor in a Film – Musical or Comedy for “Poor Things” and “Succession” won Best TV series – drama.
