WWF UK | Happy by Nature live-stream with Steve Backshall

WWF UK contacted us about helping them deliver a live lesson via YouTube to schools around the country on the subject of forests, as part of their Happy by Nature programme. The lesson was to be delivered by two presenters: an anchor based in the Living Planet Centre in Woking and British naturalist and explorer, Steve Backshall, who was based in the South West.

‘The Lost Gardens of Heligan’, a beautiful reclaimed estate near St Austell in Cornwall, was chosen as the location for Steve to deliver his sections of the lesson. We then had the challenge of how we broadcast from a forest. We could use a 4G or 5G mobile network or a satellite link.

The DreamingFish team headed to Heligan on a blustery and wet day to work out how to broadcast from the middle of a remote forest. After a walk around the Gardens, making checks on network connectivity as we went, a spot was chosen that allowed for access to power, a decent 4G mobile signal and a number of locations which we could use for the lesson. We undertook a number of rehearsals of the lesson, with the mobile router and the team at WWF to ensure we had a solid broadcast solution, before heading back down to Cornwall for the live broadcast.

The day of the broadcast was beautiful and we didn’t need to worry about rain cover. We set everything up and tested the signal before Steve arrived. We then ran through some more rehearsals before going live and delivering the lesson. It went off without a hitch and Steve was the consummate professional. Louise, at WWF, compared the lesson and did an amazing job. A big shoutout to WWF for having us. Check out the live-stream below!

“Just wanted to say a huge thanks and shout out to all of you who made yesterday’s live lesson with Steve Backshall such a HUGE success! It was a brilliant (and exhausting) day when everything came together beautifully! Our presenters Louise and Steve B smashed it and delivered a really engaging and exciting live lesson from The Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall. We were blessed with good weather, and the Gods were kind to us too when it came to signal strength and the absence of any technical gremlins. Big shout out to our friends at Dreaming Fish Productions who were superb and remained calm and held the whole production together in a difficult environment. Thanks Phil, Lucy & Ross.”
