What is a training video?
Videos are all around us. We are exposed to them on a daily basis and they’re becoming one of the most popular ways of sharing content with audiences worldwide. Did you know that after Google, YouTube is the second most popular search engine? YouTube actually receives more searches per month than Yahoo or Microsoft Bing. It’s no wonder more businesses are growing their online presence with digital marketing tools like video production.
Training videos have an educational purpose, helping viewers learn new information, skills or processes. Businesses can use them to introduce new employees and clients to their organisation, develop skills of existing teams, explain complex ideas, or even communicate their company values to potential investors.
In today’s fast-paced tech world, people are increasingly turning to video to find answers, learn new skills and discover new products. In fact, a 2020 study found that 90% of people had discovered new brands/products via YouTube (via Oberlo). We put this into practice for Vorwerk’s Thermomix, creating a series of training videos with Italian celebrity chef, Gino D’Acampo in 2020. The videos were designed to help users get more from the product, making its features and functionality easier to understand; putting practical guidance directly in front of its audience.
What are the benefits of training videos?
Investing in training videos can support the growth and development of your business, while keeping your teams engaged and learning. They give employees a flexible way to build their skills, revisit important information and access training whenever they need it. The benefits go beyond employee development. Training videos are a long-term investment. Once created, you can reuse them across your business; sharing them across multiple platforms without the ongoing costs. Microsoft is a great case study to prove this. They replaced their classroom training with online videos and their training costs dropped from $320 to just $17 per person. That’s a significant saving! It’s also a great example of how training video content can deliver value, long after production. Seems like a no-brainer to us!
Different types of training videos:
Training videos vary greatly depending on your company’s industry and needs. Below are some of the most common types of training videos you’ll find:
- Microvideos are short and straight-to-the-point videos commonly focused around one topic. They usually last less than a minute and are perfect for teaching employees a new software or business programme.
- Tutorial videos are perhaps the most common type of instructional video. They guide audiences through the steps they need to take to complete a specific task. Often referred to as ‘how-to’ or ‘explainer’ videos, an article by Forbes in stated that 90% of people watch tutorial-type videos when starting a DIY project. Depending on your needs, tutorial videos can be live-action, animated or purely text based…The choice is yours!
- Company training videos are an essential tool for enhancing your employees skills and knowledge of the workplace. They most cover things like health and safety, compliance/harassment policies or hardware/software training for employees. These videos are the follow-along type and can often feature an interactive element, helping to keep viewers engaged. Did you know that our brains can process visuals 60,000 times faster than text? Recent studies showed that 95% of a video’s message is retained by viewers compared to just 10% when reading text.
- Screencasts provide a quick and simple way to teach audiences how to complete specific tasks. They’re typically informal and aimed at smaller, more targeted audiences, making them ideal for sharing straightforward instructions or demonstrating software and processes. Created using screen recordings, screencasts can be produced quickly with lower costs than live-action or animated explainer videos.
Examples of our training videos:
As you can see, there are many types of training videos available for your business. At DreamingFish, we’re experts at creating engaging video content, across multiple industries. Over the years, we have produced a host of training videos. As most of these videos were created for internal use, we can only share a few:
- Network Rail have been a client of ours for the last two and a half years and we recently created an internal comms video for them including the launch of their ‘Putting Passengers First’ campaign.
- Another great example of a training video is one that we created for Surrey based dog care facility, Bruce’s Doggy Daycare Centre, where a series of live action training videos were produced with the goal of teaching and informing their employees about on-site safety and canine care.
- We’ve worked with IBM for many years and have built a great working relationship. The FritoLay training video was created to launch its internal Sales Hub app and show employees how to use it effectively. The video guides users through key features, including communicating with managers, recording their progress and correctly setting up and organising FritoLay displays in store. To keep the content engaging, we took a tongue-in-cheek approach, using humour to hold viewers’ attention, while delivering key information.
