Global reach, local touch: the power of flexible production

Producing content across multiple locations does not always require the same production model. Some projects need a full team on the ground. Others benefit from trusted local crews, remote direction or streamlined remote capture. The key is choosing the right setup for the job.

That flexibility has been central to how we at DreamingFish have supported the international filming for software company, SambaNova, and other clients. Recent shoots have included Berlin, Tokyo, Munich and Sydney, delivered using experienced local crews while creative oversight, client communication and post-production remained tightly managed from the our team back in the UK. This approach allowed the production to stay agile, cost-efficient and easy to manage, without compromising on overall quality.

Just as importantly, it is not a one-size-fits-all model. We can absolutely travel and be there in person when the brief demands it. The advantage is that we are able to scale production up or down depending on budget, logistics, timeline and the type of content being made.

A separate example shows how that flexibility can work in another way. For an interview in Canada, we dialled in remotely via a laptop, directly to a trusted local crew on location. That gave the client the reassurance of live creative input while keeping the setup lean and practical. It is a good example of how remote direction can work effectively when the right crew and communication structure are in place.

The same principle applies to interview capture through platforms like Riverside. Remote recording is a great option as it can fit around busy schedules, remove travel barriers and create a more accessible way for people to take part in videos. Audiences are now completely used to seeing contributors on a laptop or desktop screen, so this format often feels natural rather than compromised. Used well, it can be direct, human and highly effective.

What underpins all of this is a trusted global network, clear communication and a production approach built around the needs of each project. It is not about pushing everything into a remote model. It is about having the experience and flexibility to choose the right one.

How do you maintain quality control when using local crews overseas?

Distance doesn’t mean a drop in standards. We maintain a tight grip on the creative reins through constant communication and remote oversight. By managing the brief, the client relationship and the final edit in-house, we ensure that whether the cameras are in Tokyo or Toronto, the result is the same.

What exactly is “remote direction”?

Think of it as being on set, just without the jet lag (depending on the location!) We dial into the location via laptop to direct our local crews in real time. It allows us to conduct interviews and tweak shots exactly as we would in person, giving you the reassurance of live creative input, while keeping the production lean and practical.

How do I know which production model is right for my project?

That’s where our expertise comes in. We look at your budget, your timeline and your goals to scale a setup that fits perfectly. Whether it’s a full-scale global expedition or a streamlined remote session, we’ll help you choose the smartest way to tell your story. Interested in learning more? Get in touch!
